5 HVAC Maintenance Tips for Pet Owners

We love our pets! They provide us with companionship, comfort and unconditional love. But our precious fur-babies can also leave an excess of hair and dander in our homes and while generally this means dusting and vacuuming frequently, it may also mean added stress on your HVAC system.

To keep your system working efficiently and effectively, we recommend these 5 HVAC Tips for Pet Owners

1. Groom Your Pets
Pet hair can rapidly cover your HVAC filter surface and can clog air ducts. Regular grooming can help reduce the amount of pet hair and dander your kitty or pet sheds, and will likely cut down on the time you spend dusting and vacuuming. Brush your pets outdoors weekly; bathe dogs no more than every 3-5 weeks, and blow dry them to remove loose hair.

2. Change Your Filters
In homes with pets, it’s common for the HVAC system’s air filter to become filled with fur and pet dander. In fact, it’s one of the biggest HVAC impacts of pet ownership. A clogged filter will not be able to catch pollutants and will cause your air conditioner to work harder to cool your home. Depending on how many pets you have (and how much they shed), you will need you to replace or wash your filter more frequently. In some cases every 30-45 days.

3. Clean Your Air Return
The system’s return vent sucks in air and then re-circulates it either cooled or warmed, back into your home. If your return is dirty with pet hair, the system will have to work harder to pull air in, putting unnecessary stress on the system. The easiest way to clean the return vent for your HVAC system is with a vacuum.

4. Add an Air Purifier
If you’ve experienced spring in North Georgia, you know our pollen season is unmatched! If you want to insure the air in your home is as clean as possible, we recommend installing an air purifier. When you incorporate an air purifier in your HVAC system, you’ll be able to remove harmful particles from the air in your home so that your family can breathe easy regardless of pollen or pet hair.
