HVAC FILTERS 101

For many homeowners changing an air conditioner filter is simple. This is fortunate because it’s one of the most important HVAC maintenance tasks. A clean filter can help keep an HVAC system running efficiently and reliably for years.

PURPOSE OF AN AIR FILTER

HVAC filters remove particles from the air you breathe, therefore improving indoor air quality. They also keep the HVAC system components free from dust and debris so they run efficiently and reliably.  A dirty filter can restrict air flow, which affects your comfort, and over time, causes unnecessary wear and tear on the system. To avoid potential problems, be sure to inspect, clean and/or replace your HVAC air filter regularly, and according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule.

Here in North Georgia, with our spring pollen season and fall ragweed season, we recommend changing the filter at least twice per year, but more often quarterly. Factors which affect this maintenance schedule include filter type and size, pets, smoking indoors, age of system, and type/age of ductwork. Integrity Air recommends inspecting your filter each month during peak usage seasons like July-September and December-February here in Pickens and Gilmer counties.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FILTER

There are several factors to consider when choosing the best filter for your HVAC system:
On top of changing your HVAC filter regularly, you should schedule routine HVAC maintenance with a licensed professional like Integrity Air. Preventative maintenance is the best way to avoid system downtime, and save you money on future repairs. – Filter Size: remove your old filter and check its size specifications (the size specified by the manufacturer should also be located inside the filter cabinet). Using the size that fits snuggly is important as proper fit prevents air, dust and debris from slipping around the edges of the filter.

– Filter Style: filters come in different thicknesses and styles (pleated vs. non-pleated). Generally, thicker HVAC filters last longer and can be more efficient than thinner styles. For the most part, pleated filters are more efficient and have a longer life span than simple fiberglass non-pleated filters. The additional surface area of pleated filters allows them to catch pollutants/contaminants, while the smaller pore size captures airborne particles without restricting the air flow of your HVAC system.

Rheem HVAC Air Filter– Filter Efficiency: MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is the industry standard rating system accepted by The American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This standard helps consumers evaluate air filters for overall effectiveness. Basically, the higher the MERV rating, the greater the efficiency in removing particles and pollutants.

However, bigger (or higher) is not always better. It is possible to choose a MERV filter that’s the proper rating for your system otherwise you run the risk of reducing air flow, increasing pressure and using more energy.
